With Summer fast approaching, and your body waking from winter hibernation mode it’s time to get out and be active again. After spending the last few months mostly indoors and in sweatpants, I’m sure we can all use it, but let's be honest making the shift is easier said than done. Getting back into a workout routine takes time and effort until it’s well-established in your weekly schedule.
So here are a few tips you can try to make it easier and more exciting for your mind and body to get moving and back in shape:
Try something new and fun
Yes, a gym membership or going for morning runs are the most common options if you don’t have a hobby or a sport that you love, and it works too. But we all know it can get boring and repetitive. So why not try something different? What is that one thing you’ve always wanted to try but never dared to do? Whether it’s dancing, climbing, surfing, skating or cycling. Doing what you love will help keep you motivated and excited to learn and progress, while turning it into a fun, easy-to-follow routine.
Set up short-term, feasible goals
Imagine you put your mind to learning to surf this summer. It will be an unforgettable experience, but it will also take a lot of repetition, falling off (luckily into water), and sore muscles. Be nice to yourself and have a positive mindset. Remember you do it for yourself, to have fun and build healthy habits. You are not attempting to be a pro surfer and enter the world tour, so enjoy the journey and every step of the way.
Join a group of like-minded people
Having buddies to practice and share the experience with will make it much more enjoyable. And even more, if you join a community where it's all about empowering and lifting each other. Plus it gives you the added pressure to show up not only for yourself but for the rest of the group. Teamwork all the way!
Adapt that fun activity to fit your life
Find a reasonable schedule and be realistic. You might have found a new life-changing passion and want to dedicate as much time as possible. But chances are that will not be possible as you have other grown-up duties to attend to during your week. So make sure whatever you choose fits into your schedule, it’s not too overwhelming and it’s time just for you to do what you love.
Get professional coaching
Whether you’ve chosen to get into yoga, learn skateboarding, or start boxing, it’s advised that you do it with a skilled instructor that can guide you through the journey. If you do you will:
avoid a lot of DIY mistakes and frustrations while you try to figure out things on your own
learn faster as your experienced trainer knows all the tricks and tips
be safer as your coach can gives you all the do's and don’ts, and how to use proper techniques to avoid injuries
